EMFs: The Good and the Bad

 About three months ago, in a moment of joy, I jumped in the air to celebrate returning to a normal routine after healing from a fractured tibia — and stumbled backwards, tripping over my cat, fracturing the L1 vertebrae of my spine. It has been that kind of year.

The severity of my fracture, thankfully, did not need surgical intervention, only time to heal and a program of modified activity. In my search for other avenues of recovery I came across PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic frequency) therapy. This therapy is part of a growing trend in vibrational medicine, one with a potential recognized by medical science.1 The following is from the National Institutes of Health:

Overall, PEMF promotes bone healing and joint preservation by augmenting the structural integrity of the bone and cartilage extracellular matrix, reducing inflammation, and enhancing repair…2

I was somewhat familiar with EMFs from articles I wrote for AMD about six years ago. My previous articles emphasized the importance of the IonCleanse by AMD’s FCC certification. Our foot bath also meets CE standards which are more broad and include health safety, such as protection from electrical shock from AC (alternating current) leakage, as well.  That symbol is also shown on our foot baths. 

                                                                       

What are EMFs

An electromagnetic field is generated by the flow of electric charges. The earth has a huge emf, generated by the movement of electrons from the molten iron and nickel in its core.  Humans are also magnetic. Our body’s processes rely on the flow of electrically charged particles with their associated magnetic fields: the heart, for example, has the largest emf field, generated from the flow of calcium, potassium, and sodium ions as the heart contracts and relaxes. 3

The Bad

EMFs are categorized by frequency (which also determines wavelength). Ionizing EMFs include x-rays, gamma rays, and ionizing UV B and UV C rays. These are high frequency, high energy fields that can  break the chemical bonds of cells and damage DNA. There seems to be no discussion about whether or not they are harmful.

To Be Further Determined

The same cannot be said for  all mid and low frequency EMFs.  

The scientific debate partly centers around whether or not enough is known to assess their impact on health.

Low- to mid-frequency EMFs, which include static fields (electric or magnetic fields that do not vary with time), magnetic fields from electric power lines and appliances, radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, and visible light. These EMFs are in the non-ionizing radiation part of the electromagnetic spectrum and are not known to damage DNA or cells directly.4

One systematic review investigated the following:

The rapid evolution of wireless communication technologies continues to introduce new applications and expand into higher frequency ranges. This review identifies many experimental studies reporting the biological effects of EMFs on humans, animals, and plants. These include changes in fertility parameters, cellular responses associated with oxidative stress, developmental outcomes, behavioral alterations, and cognitive effects. Our findings highlight why it is important to take a closer, structured look at how EMF exposure might affect both human health and the environment. This review focused on reported biological effects, without implying universality or disregarding studies that observed neutral or application-related outcomes. The diversity in reported results highlights the need for cautious interpretation and context- specific analysis.5

The Good 

The healing center I visit for one of my PEMF treatments (I go the healing center for low intensity and an integrative medical center for hight intensity) supplements my session with red light therapy. Red light therapy also has scientific validity for playing a role in bone health and healing.5

                               

The IonCleanse

We are surrounded by EMFs everywhere: they are part of the fabric of life. Most natural EMFs are harmless, although some, such as UV radiation from the sun, can cause cell damage.Some EMFs can make you feel good – like the those from the ions created by the surf pounding on a beach somewhere. Or those created by the ionic field of an IonCleanse detox foot bath session.  Customers continually remind us of  how relax a session makes them feel. Of how much better they sleep. Detox happens during the session, but with a nervous system in rest and digest, and better sleep, detox continues for 4 to 5 days afterwards.
